After graduating in 1983, trained architect Pierre Lallemand co-founds his first practice, Art & Build, in 1989, where he will stay as head of design until 2010. He quickly becomes renowned for several outstanding landmark buildings including the Library of Human Sciences at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the new Solvay Brussels School. In addition, Lallemand signed the world-famous renovation of the HQ of the European Commission, a building that symbolises Europe, the Berlaymont. Most of Lallemand’s edifices stand out through their unique characteristics and pertinence from a society, aesthetic, functional and technological perspective. A multifaceted creator and designer, his work percolates in many different fields including plastic arts and industrial design. His Moonlight lamps, made-to-measure Ecce Bikes or Ionic range of sailing boats illustrate the multidisciplinary approach of the master who fluently merges pragmatic and technical considerations under a plastic vision integrating a strong sense of time and paradoxically, timelessness. As he explores plethora disciplines, he envisages every domain like an experimentation laboratory essential to materialise an idea and the articulation of a shared language. His scale models, objects, paintings and drawings have been shown in Brussels, Paris, Cologne, Milan... and now figure in the world’s most prestigious private and public art collections, including San Francisco’s MoMA. In 2015, conscious of the profound rejuvenation of the architectural process, he founds a new practice, Pierre Lallemand & Partners (PLPA) where Romy Thoumsaint soon joins him. This structure focuses on the projection and conception of architectural design. In that sense, this positioning serves as another means of ensuring an efficient vision adapted to today’s world and to produce projects that often go beyond the expectations of the patrons in short delays imposed by an increasingly versatile market.
